GoalCents vs Spreadsheets

Your spreadsheet's math, without the upkeep

A spreadsheet does exactly what you built and nothing more. Row by row, here is what the app automates, and the two places your sheet keeps the crown.

Logging that actually happens

Widget, Lock Screen, Siri and card taps make capture a two-second habit instead of a Sunday chore.

It watches your ledger

Recurring bills, price creep and duplicates are spotted for you. A sheet only knows what you typed.

Math a drag-fill cannot break

Debt payoff, safe to spend and room tracking run in an engine, not in a formula one edit can knock over.

Where the sheet wins

Works on any device

A spreadsheet runs anywhere. GoalCents is an iPhone app.

NoYes

Infinitely customisable

A sheet will model anything you can put in a formula. An app will not.

NoYes

Partial means a spreadsheet can be built to do it: you write the formulas, and you keep them correct.

The short version

Keep the sheet if you genuinely enjoy maintaining it. Switch if the logging stopped happening: capturing a purchase in seconds is what keeps the whole system alive, and if you ever want the sheet back, your history exports as CSV.

FAQ

Why switch from a spreadsheet that already works?

If it still gets opened and updated every week, keep it. Spreadsheet budgets rarely die because a formula broke: they die the busy week when three days of purchases never make it into the file. GoalCents moves logging to the moment you pay, a widget tap, Siri or a card tap, so the rows keep arriving whether or not you ever sit down to update anything.

Can I get my data back out if I stop using GoalCents?

Anytime. Export your full history from Settings as a ZIP of CSV files, one per data type, and they open straight in the spreadsheet you came from. Deleting your account removes every record after an emailed confirmation code.

What does a spreadsheet still do better?

Anything bespoke. Custom formulas, unusual math, a layout only you understand: a sheet will follow you anywhere, and an app never fully will. GoalCents covers the tracking, budgeting and payoff math most households need, and stops there.

Retire the Sunday update

Free on iOS. Bring your balances, skip the formulas. Everything exports back to CSV whenever you want it.
